This Rough Magic

The syntactical nature of reality, the real secret of magic, is that the world is made of words. And if you know the words that the world is made of, you can make of it whatever you wish.

  2. I love this quote. If there isn’t a word for something, it doesn’t really exist. That’s what fascinates me so much about all the new words that keep populating the culture (“twerking” for example). I could live with many of them just fine.

    • Spoken like a true Professor of Sociology :)

We bring the world into being by speaking it (or as the Aboriginal peoples of Australia say, by singing it) and it’s not limited to what comes out of mouths. Everything that we are speaks, and we are declaring the world into being at each moment. “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
