A Litany of Prayer for Aleppo

Interrupting the Silence

How long, O Lord, how long?

There is no peace in Aleppo. There is no peace in Syria. Every night the people flood their beds with tears and drench their couches with weeping. Their eyes waste away with grief. Their spirits shake with terror. You are the one who took them out of the womb. They have been entrusted to you ever since they were born.

How long, O Lord, how long?

We turn to you, O Lord. To whom else can we go? Lord, hear our prayer for the people of Aleppo and let our cry come to you.

  1. Hi, Narelle! Beautiful prayer for all who need it. I often hear people talk about God forsaking those who are suffering. Or maybe a cruel God, letting atrocities occur as they do every moment. I don’t see things that way (of course, I don’t believe in God, per se, either). In the midst of the pain, fear, and hatred are the seeds of compassion and healing. It’s impossible to have one without the the other.

    • Well said, Lorna. The people who talk about God forsaking those suffering or being cruel, or about “believing” in God, are those who think about God as an old man in the sky or a fairy at the bottom of the garden or a father who should have protected them and let nothing bad ever happen. And you know who is the biggest group in this category? Atheists!!! :)

Merry Christmas and a lotus for you, Buddha to be xx
